Ministry of Civil Aviation Advises to Play Indian Music in Flights, Airports

The Aviation Ministry has expressed its desire to play Indian music on flights and airport premises. Citing a request by the Indian Council of Cultural Research (ICCR), the ministry has written to airlines and airport operators to consider playing Indian music on board. Usha Padhee, the Joint Secretary in the Aviation Ministry, suggested the changes in the letter.

The ICCR is an autonomous organisation of the Indian government that reports to the Ministry of External Affairs. On December 23, ICCR wrote to Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, requesting that Indian music be promoted on aircraft operated by Indian carriers.

According to the Aviation Ministry, Indian airlines rarely play Indian music on flights. The Joint Secretary in the letter added that Indian music reflects the country’s rich heritage and culture, and is one of the many things that Indians are proud of.

“Music played by most of the airlines across the globe is quintessential of the country to which the airline belongs, for example, jazz in American airlines or Mozart in Austrian airlines and Arab music in an airline from the Middle East,” The Indian Express quoted the contents of the letter.

Most domestic airlines currently play conventional western instrumental music inside the plane during boarding and deboarding. Some airlines even play custom-made brand melodies or songs. However, due to India’s size and variety, Indian music comprises a wide range of genres and styles, including classical music, folk music, light vocal music, instrumental music, etc. And the ICCR recommends highlighting this diversity.

The ICCR President and Rajya Sabha MP, Vinay Sahasrabuddhe handed over the letter to Scindia last week when the latter visited their headquarters.

Among the signatories of the letter are artists and musicians such as Anu Malik, Malini Awasthi, Kaushal S Inamdar, Manjusha Patil K, Rita Ganguly, and Wasifuddin Dagar – who were also present during the meeting with Scindia.

Interestingly, the Ministry of Civil Aviation had encouraged airlines, both state-owned and commercial, to convey information about freedom fighters in their in-flight announcements ahead of India’s 75th Independence Day in August this year.

In a wide-ranging interview on the McLaren website, Zak Brown, the CEO of motorsport division of the supercar group has revealed that he would like to see an end to B-team culture that’s afflicted F1 in recent years. He feels this is greatly important in light of the budget cap which could expose a loophole to some of the big teams who could experience development with their B-teams and bypass the budget cap. 

Already, it is a well-known fact that AlphaTauri and Red Bull are part of the same parent group. Similarly, Ferrari is the engine supplier to Alfa Romeo and Haas. Haas even absorbed a lot of Ferrari staff forced because of the budget cap which operates from a facility inside the Ferrari compound in Maranello. Alfa Romeo, of course, is part of Stellantis, but John Elkann, the chairman of Ferrari is also the chairman of Stellantis and his holding company has significant stakes in both. Mercedes also collaborates closely with Aston Martin and is has a stake in it apart from being an engine supplier. 

Brown despite being a Mercedes customer is against these alliances and feels there should be a way to curb them. 

“The threat of A and B teams has not gone away. It is vital that the governance of the sport is strengthened to prevent this,” he said. 

“The regulations, as they stand today, are heavily biased towards B teams/customer teams which is not in line with F1’s principle of a group of genuine constructors competing with one another on even terms,” he wrote. “It is diminishing what being an F1 ‘team’ means and the fabric of the sport,” he explained.

McLaren returned to Mercedes power in 2021 but reiterates its independence 

“F1 needs to be 10 true constructors, where each team – apart from sharing the PU and potentially the gearbox internals – must design and produce all parts which are performance relevant. Right now, there is too much diversity in the business models between teams. Trying to apply the same set of complex regulations to each, and then policing them effectively, is needlessly complicated and compromised as a result,” Brown added. 

In fact, before Brown was hired by McLaren, its former CEO Ron Dennis had a firm belief that only a works team could win the constructors title and that was the reason he walked away from the Mercedes partnership and lured Honda back into F1. That of course was disastrous. 

“This cost-capped environment should allow teams to become more recognisable entities in their own right within a realistic budget, without the concern of significant performance differences based on how much each team can spend. In a nutshell, the current situation allows B teams to be over-competitive compared to constructors, and A teams to be over-competitive by having the benefit of a B team,” he said. 

Brown is worried that only a constructor with a B-team would perhaps be able to compete for a world championship because of the wording of the rules. He also added that by virtue of having a B-team, independent teams are also bullied into a corner as these bigger teams also have control over more votes.

“On top of this, the voting pressure placed by the A teams on their B teams is not consistent with the promotion of an equitable sport based on individual team merit.  As I have said before – and these teams won’t admit to it – there are times when some smaller teams vote against their own interests to satisfy the agenda of their A team,” he added.

Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal Hints at Upcoming Electric Car on Twitter

There’s another new piece of development around Ola Electric, although, it might not be what most think. This time around, Ola Electric CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has replied to a photograph posted by a Twitter user featuring an electric Tata Nexon and Ola S1 Pro electric scooter. Aggarwal, being quite Twitter-savvy himself, replied to the tweet saying, “Next car replacement should be the Ola electric car”. For those out there that may think that this may be far-fetched, think again. Ola Electric had made previous claims that the company will come out with an electric car in 2023, and plans to expand across all segments of the EV business in India. In fact, post this Twitter exchange, Aggarwal even shared an image of what the Ola electric car could look like once it arrives in India. Mind you, Ola Electric had hired Wayne Burgess as VP of Design last year.

However, there are no concrete details on the Ola Electric car just yet. Ola did, however, enter the used car sales market not too long ago, called Ola Cars. Furthermore, Ola Electric yesterday announced that it has raised over $200 million from Tekne Private Ventures, Alpine Opportunity Fund, Edelweiss and others. The latest round values the company at $5 billion.

“We have changed the entire scooter industry and are now looking forward to bringing our innovative products to more two-wheeler categories including bikes as well as cars. I thank the investors for their support and look forward to partnering with them to take the EV revolution from India to the world,” Bhavish Aggarwal, Founder and CEO, Ola said in a statement.

Over the last 12 months Ola Electric has built the Future factory which is now producing almost 1,000 units of its S1 and S1 Pro electric scooters per day, Aggarwal said earlier.

In a tweet, Aggarwal shared a picture of the scooters with the caption: “Production just for today so far!”

“Futurefactory now producing almost 1000 scooters a day. Opening up purchase window for remaining customers soon,” he wrote in the tweet.

In December end, Ola Electric had revealed that it has dispatched all units of its S1 and S1 Pro electric scooters to its customers.

As part of its ambitious charging infrastructure goal, Ola Electric will install more than 4,000 charging points for its electric scooters across cities in 2022.
